The scarf was created using a combination of stitched and bound resist dyeing.
Materials: Ponge 5 silk scarf (90 x 180 cm), wine red dye for silk, needle, thread, string.
Using back stitches of varying lengths, embroider lines, waves, ellipses and spirals onto the fabric… Stitch a pattern into the fabric, pull the threads tight and use knots to fix in place. Where there are straight lines, you can also bind the fabric with thread or string at the place where the fabric was gathered.
Besides the patterns created by stitching, there are others that were made from binding the fabric. The bound and stitched fabric is submerged into a dye bath. The strings are removed and stitches removed with a seam ripper only after the fabric has been dyed and put through a first rinsing. At the sites where the fabric was bound, the original white colour remains with gradations to the colour used.
After dyeing the scarf, follow the package instructions to fix the dye.
