One of our basic needs as human beings is to adorn our bodies, and this prehistoric need has survived right up to modern times. Even though jewellery clearly serves as a decorative element, we are also able to perceive it as a charm or as information that communicates something about the wearer’s lifestyle and position in society.
Beads are a very popular fashion accessory. Beads are not solely intended for making necklaces - they can also be put to good use to create small decorative items, frames and belts, or can be used in embroidery, for decorating purses, wallets, book covers … Various materials can be combined (glass, wood, ceramic, polymer clay, shells, stones and metal). In the past, beads were used as a substitute for pearls. Western glass beads were extremely popular among American Indians.
